What is ericksonian hypnosis?
There has always been prejudices surrounding hypnosis. But what is hypnosis? Hypnosis is one of the different states of consciousness that our brain knows. The sleep state and the day-to-day state are familiar to us, but there are many more. There are states of intense concentration, euphoria, stress, and states of slight deconnection to the outside world, such as when listening to music… Our brain manages these different states of consciousness in a totally natural way.
Milton Erikson, an American therapist, developed a therapy based on the state of hypnosis, sometimes also called state of trance. He noticed that when someone was in a state of modified conscience, they could cut themselves off from an overwhelming mental state and access other personal resources, those from the unconscious part of the brain.
By direct or indirect suggestions, a deep change encompassing the whole person is then possible. At that moment it is possible to reprogram a behavior that the person wants to change. This process can also enable the person to be aware of their deep values and how they impact one’s life. It also helps to reconnect with different inner parts of the person that need to be heard in order to be understood.
Hypnotherapy enables long term change, a change for a more harmonious and more balanced life. This therapy focuses on the respect of the person. It is possible at any time to leave the state of hypnosis. The person stays in control of what they are living, accompanied by the therapist on their inner journey. The sessions can be dynamic! It is not unusual to move around and talk whilst under hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is for adults as well as for children and teenagers.
